An Entrepreneur in Today’s Economy

Currently the world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel, Nike began its business by selling shoes from the back of Phil Knight’s green Plymouth Valiant. Entrepreneurs share many similar traits. They take risks, have the motivation to succeed, and pursue their own passions and interests. Phil Knight worked with his former Oregon coach, Bill Bowerman, to form Blue Ribbon Sports Inc. which became Nike in 1972. Nike products evolved throughout the 1980s. They developed lighter shoes that allowed runners to get faster times. In 2004, Knight resigned from his position as president and CEO. Over 40 years, the partnership that began making waffle iron shoes grew into the $12 billion corporation with its famed swoosh seen worldwide.
